After three years of excess work, the time has come to focus more of my attention on my family—and my home. Benign neglect can be a good thing, but there’s a limit. The washing machine incident (see previous post) was my cue that a little household management is in order—as well as some freshening and repairs. As I know from all the work I’ve accomplished professionally recently, the best way for me to ensure that things get done is to define them in writing on a To Do list. Since chronicling my own home improvements is a defining feature of this blog, it’ll be helpful to me (and anyone who chooses to follow my efforts) to create what I am calling my Happy Home Wish List. It includes a series of projects, large and small, which I hope to complete over the course of the coming year. I’ll keep you posted on my progress. Here’s the List:

Wish List of Projects

1.    Comprehensive clutter-clearing, organizing and speed cleaning plan

2.    New organic mattress

3.    New DIY blackout shade on bedroom window

4.    Three custom closets

5.    Built-in storage under staircase

6.    Repair cracks in walls and get a paint job throughout, maybe DIY

7.    Make new slipcovers for living room chairs

8.    New summer and winter accents for bedroom and living room

9.    Sew a quilt with fabric scraps

10.  Add DIY latticework and/or baker’s rack for plants to terrace

11.  Built-in bookshelves upstairs bedroom

12.  Refinish or replace the floor

13.  Fix home office desk (was built-in at wrong height)

14.  Paint upstairs guest room furniture

15.  Paint TV armoire

16.  Renovate kitchen

17.  Renovate master bath

18.  Replace a lampshade or two

19.  Carpet pads under carpets

20.  Get a chair of my own!
