There’s nothing like a change of scene to clear out the mental cobwebs and alter one’s perspective. My husband, Anil, and I ventured off to the Chesapeake Bay over Memorial Day weekend, and the beautiful historic buildings in Easton, Oxford, St. Michaels and Annapolis—as well as the lovely rural landscape surrounding these villages—gently diverted my attention from my home improvement projects to quieter ways of living as well as the rich history of our nation (I’ll write about my visit to the landmark home of William Paca, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence, in a later post). It also became clear to me that now is the perfect time to shift gears altogether with my career. Not only can my home use a tune-up, the working pattern of my life can benefit from an adjustment, too.
So, after almost 10 years working as a decorating and design editor in the corporate world, I’m shifting gears and plan to pursue a more independent work life, as I did for most of the first half of my career. My first step, of course, will be to turn my attention toward taking care of myself, my family and friends—and my own home (see previous post for my game plan at home). Working in freelance mode in this economy may put a damper on my ambitions as far as the timeline goes, but I’m still determined to finish most of the projects on my list before the year is through. I hope you’ll support me in my quest—and I’ll hope you’ll share your own stories and home improvement projects, too. Here’s to all fresh starts!
