Looking for an easy way to spiff up your kitchen for the holidays? Then consider brightening the inside of your cabinets with a pretty colorful paper backing like our friends Saverio Mancina and Ray Ehscheid did. Even if you don’t have glass-fronted cabinets like theirs, you could still do this treatment—and open a door to the surprise of color and pattern! Here’s their explanation of how they did it:
“To bring a color pop into an otherwise elegant, but simple kitchen, we found some lovely, hand-printed Japanese washi paper online thru Paper Source, and selected several sheets that were slightly wider than our cabinets (we chose a small-scale pattern to limit matching issues). You could also use wallpaper—for this project a single roll should be more than adequate.
Remove the shelves inside the cabinet and, using a standard measuring tape, measure the height and width of the interior rear panel. Transfer these dimensions to the wrapping paper, and cut to fit. Don’t worry if the paper is not long enough—we masked a seam behind one of the shelves. We also used adhesive dots only along the top and bottom edges of the paper to affix the sheets to the back of the cabinet. Once the shelves are re-inserted they help secure the paper to the back panel with pressure alone.
Put your plates and glasses back in the cabinet and enjoy the instant update—and color!”
