Whether you’re simply replacing an appliance or two or starting from scratch on a kitchen renovation, consider recycling products in reasonable shape rather than sending them to the landfill. DiggersList.com offers ways to donate old appliances along with elements like countertops or shelves to Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore. DiggersList.com is a free online classified site, where you can buy and sell affordable remodeling products, such as flooring, fixtures, appliances and other used and new excess supplies left over from remodeling projects. The site also lets you search for service providers, such as contractors, floor refinishers, painters and the like. And now the site has an alliance with Habitat for Humanity’s ReStores that lets people like me responsibly dispose of goods that can be recycled and resold.
Jim Killoren, executive director of Habitat for Humanity’s Westchester, New York, office, told me he sees his partnership with Diggerslist.com as a win-win-win for everyone. “I call it triple-green,” he says. “Save green, donate green, buy green.” In other words, you can donate your stuff, get a tax deduction and protect the planet by keeping recyclables out of the landfill, and you can buy recycled goods at great prices for your own projects either through DiggersList.com or the ReStores, both of which are accessible in numerous cities throughout the country. (Proceeds of sales through the ReStores help fund Habitat for Humanity projects around the country.) A great bonus is the fact volunteers from the ReStore that Jim manages are also willing to come and pick up the appliances and other things for free.
