Green Mattresses Inspired by the Gods

A Coco-Mat bed and bedding.

In my quest for the perfect mattress, I’ve been doing a lot of homework over the past few weeks. Among the more interesting products I’ve come across are some new mattresses by a Greece-based company called Coco-Mat. I saw them at a launch event at ABC Carpet and met the director of operations, Emmanuel Stefanakis, who gave me some background on the mattresses and invited me to test a few of them out.

These mattresses are terrific, not only because they’re made of 100 percent natural materials derived from sustainable sources, but because they can be personalized to suit your particular sleep style. Among the materials that comprise these mattresses are natural rubber, horse and camel hair, coco fiber, linen, goose down, cactus fiber, seaweed, wool, cotton and silk. The company applies a 4-layer philosophy to create a bed that works for people with different sleep styles.

You start with a base, then top it with a mattress, then cover the mattress with a top-mattress and finish the whole thing off with a high-quality pillow that works for your body type and natural sleeping pattern.

Since I already have the base in the form of our platform bed, all I’m really

interested in are the top three layers. The mattresses that appealed to me most were the Afroditi, which is made simply with natural rubber, wool and cotton, and the Iraklis, which is made of natural rubber, elasticated coco fiber, horse hair, seaweed, wool and cotton. Part of the reason I liked these is because they’re heights are only 15 cm (6 inches) and 14

cm (5 ½ inches) respectively. So I could get either one and apply a top-mattress it would work for me (I need a mattress with a slim profile to work with the style of my bed).

The company also offers 11 different styles of pillows and lots of sheets, duvets, blankets and throws, as well as furniture, cushions, towels and rugs. These mattresses and bedding will definitely be going into my notebook for further consideration. Nothing happens in my house without the seal of approval from my husband, but I have feeling he’ll like the idea of sleeping like Morpheus, the god of dreams that inspired the line. They’re now available in stores in various parts of the world. Visit the company’s Web site to find out more.
